NOTES FROM THE FIELD

Hello from the other side of the harvest station,

April 5 marks one whole year since we’ve hosted our grand opening at 5715 Canal Street. Where has the time gone?

Well, most of my time has gone into getting the farm store up and running. I’ve loved getting to know our farmers, partners, and visitors every step of the way. Babies have grown from boneless blobs to full personalities running across the lawn, shoppers moved between tiers for better and for worse, picky eaters tried new fruits and veggies, and so much more. All are little reminders that it’s always been more than folks just checking things off their grocery list.

I’m here to tell you to keep doing what you’re doing, because it enables us to keep doing what we are doing.

One in every three Houston families struggles with food insecurity, meaning there’s uncertainty about whether they can access fresh nutritious food, usually because of finances. What we saw throughout 2025 is a reflection of the bigger picture, because one in every three shoppers at the farm store needed one of the discounts (either 25% or 50% off) when purchasing food.

By signing up for a CSA share, shopping at the full-price tier at the store, or attending our programs, you’re supporting a neighbor who needs a little help getting fresh food or finding community. By experiencing Finca the way you are, you’re enabling someone else to also experience Finca in a meaningful way.

Hats off to you for setting the bar so high for the next 37 years we have left on this lease!

Xo,

Nadia

Your General Manager

Collard Greens (Finca) Greens season is in full swing. I hope you can enjoy. Once late May rolls around we won’t see any from the farm until October.
Kale – Winterbore (Finca) The leaves are on the small side but they should have the same dense flavor and texture that’s good for us
Baby Bok Choy Asian greens season is over around our parts with the flea beatles out devouring them. These come from from a small farm collective in Elgin, Hot Spell Farm.
Onion – mix From South Texas via The Common Market
Leeks (Finca) A little thin compared to what you may find in the store but I think you’ll find them delicious. They smelled so good pulling them out of the ground this morning.
