NOTES FROM THE FIELD<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

Hello CSA friends,<\/span><\/p>\n

My name is Laila, and I\u2019m the person behind many of the words, photos, and stories you see from the farm. I work on communications here, which means I have the joyful job of noticing things. I notice what\u2019s growing, what\u2019s changing, what our team is learning, and how all of that connects back to you each week when you open your CSA.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wednesday is Earth Day, which we\u2019re holding this week not as a celebration so much as a reminder: everything we eat, grow, and share is part of a larger living system we\u2019re responsible to care for together. You support this farm. This farm tends the soil. The soil feeds us all. A small, local ecosystem that fits right inside a cardboard box.<\/span><\/p>\n

As you unpack this week\u2019s share, we hope you feel a little extra gratitude for the land, the hands that harvested it, and your own kitchen that will turn these ingredients into something delicious!<\/span><\/p>\n

We would love to celebrate together in person, too. Join us this Saturday evening (6-8pm) for our <\/span>Earth Day Spring Potluck<\/span><\/i> at the farm. Bring a dish to share, a friend, and your appetite for good food and good company. We\u2019ll be under the pavilion, rain or shine, enjoying the beauty of this special place.<\/span><\/p>\n

And I have a request for you. We would love to see what happens after your CSA box leaves the farm. If you have a favorite recipe you\u2019ve made, or photos of meals you\u2019ve created with your share, please send them our way! Your plates are the final chapter of this story, and we would be thrilled to share them with our community.<\/span><\/p>\n

NOTES FROM THE FIELD<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

Last week (April 5th) marked 1 year on the new farm. I\u2019m not very good at celebrating or stopping for these types of things. In my mind, they don\u2019t stand for that much. The next day has the latest challenge and each day requires more attention and work. And maybe I also know that part of the gift of the milestone is that we get to continue to farm, which in my experience is not something many folks have the chance to do these days. Maybe there\u2019s a lingering gratitude in just getting to be a part of this work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last week, we did have some small celebrations. Lunch together as a team, sharing some memories of the last 12 months.\u00a0 It has been a super full year where we\u2019ve seen a steady settling in of the new space. I say that but we hosted over 70 classes and events over 9 months, served close to 375 households thru our Neighborhood Food access program, are training 3 apprentices in the career of agriculture, opened a new farm store, and finally launched our CSA! And there\u2019s new projects on the horizon.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re working to grow our Neighborhood Food Access program this year by expanding our Food Rx programs where 2 area clinics are referring patients for food \"prescriptions\" at our farm. And we are finally starting to implement our Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI) grant to improve our store. We have over $250k to invest in additional equipment, refrigeration, storage, signage, consulting, etc to help us improve the layout\/feel and increase the number of days the store will be open. Over the next few months you may start to see some subtle changes to the farm store, and I hope by the fall you\u2019ll begin to notice the larger changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our team has been working incredibly hard to help this grow and I have so much gratitude for their commitment to our mission and community. It takes us all.\u00a0 And of course, thank you CSA members and those who have been with us since our first CSA. <\/span>And to think that this used to be a parking lot!<\/b><\/p>\n

So I think it\u2019s worth calling back to some comments I made at our grand (re) opening:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn just a few years and all the decades after that, people will come to Finca with the experience that the farm has always been here and that will be its own achievement. And what we will have to do is to remind them that it wasn't!\u00a0 We built this together, and we needed all of your support.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
