NOTES FROM THE FIELD<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

The arrival of Spring in Houston means there\u2019s a lot happening at the farm. A season of rebirth and new beginnings, this month marks one year of the new Finca Tres Robles. It\u2019s almost incredible to look back on my notes from this time last year and think about how far we\u2019ve come in almost every aspect. We quickly went from making lots of ambitious plans for the future to actually implementing them as soon as we settled into our new home.<\/span><\/p>\n

For me, moving into the new space was a massive step towards creating a special place for building community. Since moving in, we\u2019ve hosted movie nights, potluck dinners, open mic nights, cooking classes, gardening classes, and so much more. This Spring brings many more opportunities to spend time with loved ones on the farm, all while watching our lovely crops grow steadily in the field.<\/span><\/p>\n

The other side of the programs coin is our food access initiative. Our Neighborhood Food Access (NFA) program (which never ceased during our hiatus) has gone on as usual, and it continues to grow. We\u2019ve implemented a new branch of the program, which allows participants to shop whenever is convenient to them with a store card. We\u2019re also working in partnership with a research team to help gather data in support of food prescription programs in our city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Working in the agricultural industry in a city where that is a very rare thing has given us a unique perspective on our community\u2019s perception of food and nutrition. This perspective has gotten us invited to important conversations and initiatives regarding food access and nutrition in our greater Houston community. We hope our expertise in food production and our efforts in community engagement can contribute meaningfully to joint efforts to make sure we find solutions to important issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
